Join our livestreamed event to see what’s new for
developers in the Windows 10 Creators Update. Whether you’re building
for the web or UWP, games, apps or line-of-business tools, there’s
something in it for you.
Kevin Gallo takes us on a tour of what's new in Windows 10 Creators
Update. He'll apply a developer's lens as he shows off new Windows
capabilities and tooling and will share some news along the way.
Engaging with your users has always been a challenge, especially now
that each user wants their app experience to flow seamlessly between
their many devices. In this session, we'll explore how you can meet this
need regardless of platform and form factor—whether the devices use
small screens, big screens, or no screens at all. We'll also discuss
improvements with the Windows Desktop Bridge.
First impressions are important, so one of our goals with the Windows
10 Creators Update is to make it easier to deliver beautiful, engaging
Windows app experiences. In this session, we'll discuss how the Creators
Update will help simplify building apps that feel more natural (using
Ink and Dial) and more beautiful (using Composition advances). We'll not
only walk through the big new improvements, but also highlight some of
the smaller tweaks that can be just as important, like menus, dialogs,
scrollbars and keyboards.
The Windows Store and Windows Dev Center are constantly improving to
meet the evolving needs of developers and the market. In this session,
we'll explore new Windows Store capabilities that make it easier for
customers to find and acquire your apps and games, and Dev Center
improvements that optimize your app submissions and management
workflows.
Windows is built for developers, and the Windows 10 Creators Update
is no exception. In this session, we'll focus on how Visual Studio 2017
and the Windows 10 Creators Update make you more productive. We'll
discuss updates to the Windows Device Portal, improvements to Windows
Developer Mode, Bash and Console, and many other cool advances.

When importing a CSV for my data in
a collection, how do I upload it without getting numerous errors? Is
there an Excel macro/Add-in I can use to help this process, so I have
the ability to keep commas in the field data, use semi colons as a
delimiter and double quotes around all of the field data items? What is
the maximum number of items in a collection? Is there a work around? How
do I assign actions on a detail page of a collection item? How do I take
advantage of Hero images on each page and what sizes are needed? Where
do I load the background of the app? Where do I set the splash screen vs
the logos for the app? What are the size limitations? Is there an easy
way to install the app for reviewers and team members? Register today
and reserve your virtual seat.

The Mobile Application Developer Tampa user group is sponsoring a
Xamarin spring fling BBQ.
Sponsored by Syncfusion:
http://www.syncfusion.com/
This is a worldwide Xamarin event and we will have Xamarin
Swag for this Greater Tampa area fling. It's been a long time since we
had a geek BBQ! No PowerPoints or projectors on the beach, we use
White Boards and flip charts for beach meetings. Battery power only for
laptops. We might have a Brighthouse signal there. I will check that,
but count on no internet. We will have the big hut with the huge grill,
so this event is on rain or shine. It’s a county park so this is $2
parking with incredible sunsets. There is a playground for kids. Walking
trail lookout over the Gulf where you can see houses on stilts in the
water. No bottles on beach. See park rules and general info here for
Green Key beach.
Event starts at 3PM (eat at 5) and runs until sunset, which should be
about 8:30 .Everyone needs to bring a side dish to share as well as your
own beverages and we are looking for sponsors to buy all the grill
meats, charcoal, paper plates and red plastic cups (Contact
russ@fustinobrothers.com ). The optional after party will be at the Reef
in Downtown New Port Richey, 5-minute drive away on Main St and Grand
Ave in New Port Richey, FL.
IT WILL BE A BLAST! We will be on the blog page of Xamarin for sure with
the photos we all take.
We will also be doing a fundraiser for a charity to be determined at
this event as well. So ,if you have any raffle items please send info to

Dan Hermes, author of Xamarin Mobile Application Development ,
talks about how to give your users what they need to get around your
Xamarin app quickly, moving from screen to screen with confidence
and ease. Menus, tappable icons, buttons, tabs, and lists all offer
ways to navigate your app. Dan will discuss industry-standard
approaches for tying an app’s screens together in elegant and usable
ways called navigation design patterns, based upon the concepts in
his new book. Here are the most common mobile UI navigation patterns
used in Xamarin development:
• Hierarchical
• Modal
• Drill-down list
• Navigation drawer
• Tabs
• Springboard
• Carousel
Learn how to use these navigation patterns in Xamarin.Forms and
how to approach them in Xamarin.Android and Xamarin.iOS. Moving
between screens also requires passing data between them. Dan will
talk about different ways to maintain state during navigation.
You will learn about how to:
• Create navigation to get your user from screen-to-screen
• Create many kinds of menus
• Manage state and passing data between pages
• Combine navigation patterns to form a complete app

Kevin's goal for 2014 is to figure out how to
reduce/eliminate the “last-mile” syndrome when building a mobile
apps…basically you get to the 90% mark and think you are ready to
publish, but then spend 90% of the time churning on the last 10%.
See a presentation on tips/tricks for reducing the churn… These two are
really tied together.

Build it Beta is now public for Windows Phone app developers ,
but what is Build it Beta? Well it’s all about
Windows Phone Application Testing . There are a number
of existing mechanisms available to Windows Phone application developers
but none of them offer the simplicity and ease of deployment as say
TestFlight .
Build it Beta fills that gap, providing a mechanism to
allow any Windows Phone application to be deployed for testing to
any Windows Phone 8 device*.
Firstly, why the name?
Well it’s a bit of a play on words – we’re always
looking to build better apps and of course during development we often
release “beta” versions of the app. Hence the origin of “Build it
Better Beta”.
Next, how does it work?
Windows Phone 8 included the ability to
deploy applications within the enterprise without going
through the Windows Phone Store. This is referred to as enterprise
deployment and involves
signing an application (ie the packaged application
file .xap) with a signing certificate. The same certificate needs to be
distributed to the devices that the application is to be tested on. Then
the signed xap can be installed on the devices either via code or by
distributing the application to the device via email or via a url link.
Build it Beta uses this mechanism to deliver a testing tool which
eliminates the complexity for both developers and testers.
Attend this session and learn how to get started! A
simple set of
setup instructions that will be reviewed and get you up and
running in no time at all. Download
Build it Beta from the Windows Phone Store.
Once you’ve completed the setup, all you need to do
is to start sending your .xap files to
upload @ builditbeta.com .

combined meeting
Date: Tuesday, Dec 10, 2013
NOTE: Location - Microsoft Office
Presenters - Russ Fustino, Head of Developer Evangelism, ComponentOne
This month Tampa Bay Windows Dev and the Tampa Windows Phone User
Groups are combined! Sorry for the short notice, Russ and Jay have both
been extremely busy!
What's going on?
Full on party mode. Bring a dessert or a dish to share (TekSystems
will also be bringing food).
We will have speakers, 2 in fact. The world famous Russ Fustino (of
Toolshed fame) will be bringing us a talk on building a book app with
the ComponentOne controls. The locally infamous Jay "The DevTheologian"
Kimble (sometimes affectionately called "H") will be bringing a talk on
using in Proximity to build apps that can communicate with another app
running on another phone (These same APIs also exist for Windows 8). Jay
will also be talking about the lessons he's learned in the last month
building 10 Windows 8 apps for the store (and how he built 3 in 2
hours).

Tools for Building Cross Metro Projects by Jay Kimble
Summary: Building libraries and apps that
target (and share code for) both Win 8 Metro and Windows Phone can be a
difficult task. Jay Kimble brings us some first steps for doing this
while building a library for accessing a user's Dropbox (which uses an
oAuth/REST style web services).
In windows 8, he will show us:
-- the new Async with emphasis on developing with it (and less on the
theory behind it)
-- how to access oAuth backed services using the Windows 8 Metro
WebAuthenticationBroker
-- the things built into Windows 8 Metro templates that give us some
things for free
Then in Windows Phone, Jay will show us:
-- Getting a working Windows Phone dev environment in Windows 8
-- Async for Windows Phone (and how to get it up and running on your
Windows Phone projects)
-- a WebAuthenticationBroker for Windows Phone which simplifies the
oAuth login process
-- how to deal with the places where things just aren't the same
-- how to re-use the freebies that are in the Win8 Metro Templates
Food will be provided as well as the usual giveaways. Deadline for
the Samsung Focus giveaway is this month as well (contact Jay for more
info).
